Michigan job numbers for August 2009
The number of jobs in Michigan decreased by close to 43,000 in the month of August 2009. This is the second highest number of job losses among all states. For the 12 month period since last August, the number of jobs declined by nearly 330,000, that is a 7.9 percent decrease, which is the highest percentage decrease among all states.
With over 736,000 without a job, Michigan continues to have the highest unemployment rate among states at 15,2 percent. The rate at the same time last year was 8.6 percent.
Michigan has about 3.8 million non-farm payroll employees, with trade, transportation and utilities accounting for 710.000 employees, government 659,000, professional and business 475,000, and manufacturing 428,000, among others.
In the last 12 months manufacturing jobs have declined by 142,000, professional and business jobs by 75,000, and construction jobs by 30,000. However, education and health jobs are up more than 7,000 during that period.
