Healthcare industry created 19k jobs in September 2009

Jobs in the healthcare sector continue to show promise with an increase in 19,000 jobs in the month of September. Since September 2008 nearly 300,000 jobs have been added in the healthcare industry.

For September, the healthcare subsector of ambulatory healthcare services gained the highest amount of jobs with 15,000, followed by hospitals which added another 3,600 jobs for the month.

Strong job creation in healthcare during recession

One of the strongest job creators during the recession, the healthcare industry has added 559,000 jobs since the beginning of the recession. 

However, the average job gain in the industry thus far in 2009 of 22,000 a month is down from the average gain during 2008 of 30,000 a month.

The healthcare industry accounts for about 13.6 million jobs in the U.S.
