California jobless rate inches higher in August 2009

California recorded its highest unemployment rate during this recession of 12.2 percent in August 2009. More than 2.2 million are unemployed in the state. Last August the rate was at 7.6 percent.

The number of jobs in California decreased by close to 12,000 in the month of August. For the 12 month period since last August, the number of jobs declined by nearly 741,000, which is the highest among all states.

Over 14.2 million are employed in California, with trade, transportation and utilities accounting for 2.6 million employees, government 2.5 million, professional and business 2.1 million, leisure and hospitality 1.5 million, manufacturing 1.3 million, and construction 625,000, among others.

In the last 12 months construction jobs have declined by 142,000, professional and business jobs by 133,000, and manufacturing jobs by 121,000. However, education and health jobs are up more than 14,000 during that period.
