eBay to offer IPO for Skype
eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) announced plans to offer an initial public offering for Skype. eBay plans to separate Skype from the company by completing the IPO in the first half of 2010.
eBay's President and CEO, John Donahoe said that "Skype has limited synergies with eBay and PayPal... In addition, separating Skype will allow eBay to focus entirely on our two core growth engines—e-commerce and online payments—and deliver long-term value to our stockholders."
Skype provides software that enables its users to make free video and voice calls, send instant messages and share files with other Skype users. Skype users can also make calls to landlines and mobile phones.
